The White Silence

measuring time

with almost identical individual appearance, these tiny polyps form a colony of mesmerizing patterns. each structure tells stories of the past, diligently registering and documenting climate changes in the fine layers of calcium carbonate.

every day there is a small deposit. daily deposits are stack up into monthly deposits reflecting lunar cycle and showing the seasons. those little layers indicate the number of days in a year. these silent recorders are a living proof that just a few hundred million years ago, the days were shorter and years were longer, and an annual cycle was over four hundred days.
